TAROOM AND WARWICK RODEO ACTION

TWO grandsons of legendary cowboy Jim McGuire will be in action in the Taroom Rodeo on Saturday.

James McGuire-Spalding will compete in second-division saddle bronc and bull ride and the open steer wrestling while his brother Stuart is in the rope and tie, and team roping.

The brothers’ mother Sharon McGuire is in a field of 31 in breakaway roping. Jim McGuire was one of the best all around cowboys to compete in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association starring in rough stock and timed events and his grandsons are also competing in a variety of events.

The field of 31 for the barrel race includes Warra star Jane Fay who headed the APRA standings in the season which ended on April 30 and is the early leader in the new season.

Moree rider Wendy Caban will compete at Taroom and will be one to watch after winning six APRA titles in the past decade.

In rough stock events, Wandoan rider Cameron Webster will be one of the riders to beat in a field of 16 in saddle bronc but he won’t get it all his own way in a field including Michael Maher, of Warwick, who won at Emerald last weekend.

Wandoan cowboy David Worsfold will be favourite for the bareback bronc ride after winning at Emerald.

There are more than 230 nominations for the Taroom Rodeo, the second on the Northern Run in the APRA.

Warwick bull ride

HADEN rider Matt Boland is one of the favourite for the open event at the Warwick Concreters Bull Ride on Friday night at the Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre.

The rodeo will raise funds for the Miss Rodeo Australia quest, heritage centre and Warwick high schools rodeo program.

Gates open at 5pm and action from 6pm in six events, open, second-division and junior bull rides, junior steer ride, junior poddy ride and Woolly Buckjump.

Boland is one of the top-15 in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association in the bull ride and will come up against the bulls from the Frank Biddle String in Warwick on Friday night. He will compete the next night at Taroom.

This is the largest bucking event to be held at the Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre in Alice St.
