COWBOYS from Warwick, Proserpine and Wandoan will go into rough stock finals at the Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships on October 22-25 among the favourites.
Saddle bronc rider Michael Maher from Warwick, Proserpine bull rider Roy Dunn and Wandoan bareback bronc riding sensation David Worsfold finished the 2015 season at the top of Australian Professional Rodeo Association standings and will be three of the favourites going into the four rounds of the championship finals.
Maher will be the most favourable at the championships after winning the Mt Isa Rodeo for the past two years and his hometown rodeo in Warwick last year.
His win this month at Mt Isa shows he is in top form but he will need to perform well to better close friend and standings runner-up Mark Collins, Wandoan rider Cameron Webster and Mitchell star Greg Hamilton. In the new APRA season, Hamilton is the early leader.
Dunn rose to prominence in APRA bull riding last year setting up an early lead in the standings and had twice as much prize money as the next best for most of the season.
His opponents will come from most states, including Northern Territory star Darcy McBean who won the Emerald Rodeo at the start of the Northern Run.
Worsfold just beat Toowoomba rider Owen Lee to finish the season to April 30 in top place in the bareback and the two will be the riders to beat in the final.
The top 15 in all eight APRA championships events will go head-to-head in each round in Warwick, one per day.
Other events are the rope and tie, steer wrestling, team roping, ladies barrel racing and ladies breakaway roping.
There will be second-division and junior events in Warwick at the national championships.
APRA RODEO PROGRAM: September 12 Pussycat Flats Rodeo (NT); October 4 Marrabel (SA); October 10 Rockhampton (Qld); October 21 Hobart Show Bulls and Barrels (Tas); October 22-25 Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships (Qld)..
