YEPPOON cowboy Errol Frain primed his form at three Victorian rodeos last weekend in preparation for the Comet Benefit Rodeo on Saturday. (March 19).

The Comet Rodeo is the first of three over eight days in Central Queensland in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.

Frain was one of a number of Queensland riders who made the trip south last weekend for three rodeos on the Victorian long weekend and he placed yet again.

He currently leads the steer wrestling and all around cowboy standings in the APRA and will be a short-priced favourite in the steer wrestling at Comet. Frain will also compete in team roping.

In steer wrestling, two of Frain’s toughest opponents will be Emerald brothers Shane and Kacey Kenny.

A large contingent of Central Queensland riders will compete at Comet along with many of the best from southern and northern Queensland.

In the rope and tie, three of the best chances are Emerald riders Shane Kenny and Dale Caban and Alton Downs father-and-son team Shane and Jordan Iker.

There are 16 nominations for the open saddle bronc ride, including Springsure star Allan Powell and two riders always near the top of the standings,  Michael Maher from Warwick and Cameron Webster, of Wandoan.

Sonny Schafferius from Dysart is one of the favourites for the bull ride along with Gracemere cowboy Jason Mara and Ryan Storey from Dingo.

There will be plenty of competitors in cowgirl events with 24 nominations for the barrel race and 21 in breakaway roping.

Alton Downs rider Jorja Iker, Emerald cowgirl Leanne Caban and Shellie Miller from Warwick will be three to watch in the barrel race. Miller formerly lived at Emerald but will make the trip from southern Queensland this weekend along with husband Jeff and son Kobe who will compete in roping.

Emerald rider Leanne Kenny is in breakaway roping in a field which also includes Moree rider Wendy Caban, a rider with title wins in the all around cowgirl, barrel race and breakaway roping in the same year.

There are 219 nominations for Comet.

After Comet, rodeo action will return to Central Queensland at Easter at Emerald with the Destiny Downs Good Friday Fiesta in timed events and then a championship rodeo with all eight APRA events on Easter Saturday, the Emerald Easter Sunflower  Festival Rodeo.

The Comet Benefit Rodeo starts at 6:00pm on Saturday, March 19, at the Comet Rodeo Grounds. Tickets will be on sale at the gate.
