ST GEORGE HITS OFF NEW SEASON

AUSTRALIAN Professional Rodeo Association members will be able to start securing points on the first day of the new season at the St George Show Rodeo in Queensland on May 1.

The final three rodeos for the current season are at Moree, Ettamogah and Narrabri in New South Wales.

The top 15 to April 30 will qualify for The Warwick Rodeo National Finals in late October and then on May 1 riders have the chance to start accumulating points in the new season.

The St George Show Rodeo will be a great chance close to home for Mitchell rider Greg Hamilton to start the new season on top of the early APRA saddle bronc standings.

New season action will then move to the Mackay Toyota Nebo Rodeo, an annual rodeo with a great reputation.

APRA members will then have a short break before the Bundaberg Show Rodeo on May 27.

There will be rodeo action in the Wide Bay area two weekends in a row with the Bundaberg Extreme Bulls event on June 4.

One of only a handful of two-day rodeos in the APRA, Bowen River, is scheduled on June 11-12. One of the likely starters at Bowen River in north Queensland will be star Hughenden roper and steer wrestler Clancy Middleton.

Before the action moves to Queensland, the Queensland cowgirls will need to withstand the class of Moree rider Wendy Caban in the Moree Show Rodeo on April 22 and the Narrabri Show Rodeo on April 29.

While Caban is almost assured of a spot in the national finals in breakaway roping, she is desperate for more championship points in the barrel race to finish in the top-15. She is a past title winner in both events and the all around.

It is expected some Queensland and northern New South Wales riders will make a rushed trip to the Ettamogah Pub Rodeo at Albury on April 24 in an effort to gain some championship points before the end of the current season.

The Warwick Rodeo Heritage Centre held their Heritage Week Bull Ride on 15th April. The open bullock ride was won by Andrew Mullins with a 74 and up and coming star Cameron Southern cleaned up the 2nd div bull ride with a 74, junior bull ride on a 71 and a 71 in the junior steer ride. There were no scores for the poddy ride.

APRA PROGRAM:  April 22 Moree Show Rodeo; April 24 Ettamogah Pub Rodeo, Albury; April 29 Narrabri Show Rodeo; May 1 St George (Qld) Show Rodeo; May 7 Nebo Rodeo; May 27 Bundaberg Show Rodeo.
