Alice Springs rider to compete in Peterborough Rodeo

ALICE Springs rider Tom Willoughby will be one of the favourites for the 30th Peterborough Rodeo in South Australia on Saturday. (FEB 4)

There are 119 nominations for the rodeo which will feature all eight Championship events in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.

Willoughby has drawn the horse Elpasso in the Bareback.

His toughest opposition in Bareback will come from Cameron’s Corner (Qld) rider Fred Osman who won two rounds of the National Finals in Warwick in October last year. Osman has drawn the horse Bubble Gum.

Willoughby is one of the iron men of rodeo and will contest the Bull Ride and Bareback in rough stock events and two timed events, Steer Wrestling and Team Roping at Peterborough.

His toughest opposition in timed events will come from Victorian star Terry Evison, of Pine Grove. Evison has often led APRA All Around standings down the years.

In cowgirl events, Candy Michaelis, of Lewiston, is current APRA record holder for fastest time in Breakaway Roping and will be one of the riders to watch in cowgirl events.

The toughest opposition for Michaelis in Breakaway Roping will come from current APRA Champion Rebecca Van Houten who will travel from Tullakool in New South Wales.

The Peterborough Rodeo will start at 6pm at the Peterborough Showgrounds on 4th February

Miss Rodeo Australia

BOWEN River Rodeo Queen Emma Deicke has been crowned Miss Rodeo Australia.

Ms Deicke was crowned at a gala function at the Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre after two days of judging in Warwick and will represent the Australian Professional Rodeo Association around the world in the next year.

Five Rodeo Queens took part in two days of Miss Rodeo Australia judging last weekend which included horsemanship judging at the Warwick Showgrounds.

Millmerran Rodeo Queen Tamara Evans was runner up. Sophie Amos (Warwick, Qld), Kate Taylor (Cloncurry, Qld) and Isabelle Hare (Deniliquin, NSW) were great ambassadors for their rodeo committees during the quest.

Reigning Miss Rodeo Australia Katy Scott from Cloncurry was in Warwick for the judging and presentations along with five past Miss Rodeo Australia winners who joined in celebrations to mark the 40th year since the first Miss Rodeo Australia was crowned.

Ms Deicke will travel to America and Canada as part of her prize.
