RODEO MOVES TO NORTH QUEENSLAND

MITCHELL cowboy Greg Hamilton will be aiming to boost his position in Australian Professional Rodeo Association standings when he heads to the Gargett Rodeo in North Queensland on Saturday.

The rodeo starts at 5.30pm and has all rough stock events and a barrel race.
Hamilton is 10th in the saddle bronc standings and has a chance to increase his prizemoney for the season to boost his chance in the finals next month.
The standings season finishes on September 30 and the Gargett Rodeo this weekend is the last chance for riders to boost their spot in the finals.
Going into the four rounds of the Warwick Rodeo APRA National Finals, competitors will be given credit for their earnings on the 2019 pro tour.
The top 15 in each event qualify for the finals.
Hughenden cowboy Gavin Fry is in 20th place in saddle bronc and will need to win at Gargett to give himself a chance to make the finals.
Queensland bull rider Jake Whalan is in 20th place in the standings and will also need to win to have a chance of a top-15 finish.
Standings leader Will Purcell from Victoria will be the favourite in the bull ride at Gargett.
Last year’s bull ride title winner Brady Fielder from Central Queensland has nominated for Gargett.
Standings leader Ben Hall from Tumbarumba in New South Wales is in the bareback ride.
Lukas Wilkinson is 14th in the standings and will make the trip from Stanthorpe in south Queensland to Gargett to boost his spot in the bareback standings.
Wandoan rider David Worsfold is in second place in bareback standings but hasn’t nominated for this weekend’s rodeo.
In the ladies barrel race, one of the favourites is Emerald rider Jamie Downing.
She is out of contention for the national finals but will still be aiming to win at Gargett.
One of the toughest opponents for Downing will be Emerald rider Leanne Caban who is in 10th spot on the standings.
At the national finals on October 24-27 at the Warwick Showgrounds, there will be rounds on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and then a day round of finals on the Sunday.
Second division and junior events are also on the program at the Warwick Rodeo.
