TAMWORTH PRO RODEO

URALLA rider Chris Lowe will lead a strong contingent of bull riders at a professional rodeo at the Australian Equine Livestock and Events Centre in Tamworth on Saturday. (Sept 14)

Lowe has mixed it with the best in the business at the National Finals Rodeo in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.

He is in a field including Upper Horton cowboy Jackson Gill who has recently graduated to open bulls after a championship winning career in juniors.

One of the strongest fields at the rodeo will be in saddle bronc where Tamworth rider Denny Swadling will face a strong field, including current Australian champion Anthony Caldwell, of Tibooburra (NSW), Wandoan (Qld) star Cameron Webster, Glen Kent, of Strathalbyn (SA) and New South Wales rider Robert Bandy, one of the most experienced on the circuit.

The cowgirl events have attracted fields of 46 in breakaway roping and 37 in barrel racing which puts Tamworth in the top five rodeos in the nation.

The top rider competing is Moree star Wendy Caban who has won six of the past 15 titles awarded in the three championships for cowgirls in the APRA.

Tamworth rider Phillipa Leys has experience from the National Finals Rodeo and is a regular placegetter on the circuit. One to watch from Northern New South Wales in the barrel race will be Quirindi rider Julie Flanagan who is also a keen administrator and organiser of the Murrurundi Rodeo on September 28. Pro tour barrel racing champion Leslie Moore, of Denman, has also nominated.

The best supported event at Tamworth will be team roping where there are 85 nominations, including event organisers Greg and Phillipa Leys, of Tamworth, fellow Tamworth rider and current national champion Jeff Miller and Victorian star Terry Evison.

Organisers expect to better last year’s crowd on Saturday, partly due to lower admission fees, $20 for adults, $15 for children under 16, $55 a family. Children under 4 are free.

The main performance will be at 7pm on September 14 but patrons are welcome to come from 1pm for junior events and some open competition.
