EMERALD cowboys Clancy Middleton and Brody Moss fine tuned their form for the famous Warwick Rodeo with an outstanding performance at The M Group Emerald Rodeo on Friday (October 4).
Middleton went into the rodeo on top of the team roping header standings in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association and joined with Moss to win in 4.6 seconds.
The time was just outside the national APRA record in an Emerald event where four teams went under six seconds, a rare feat in the sport.
Moss is second behind leader Aaron Bookluck, of Nilma North, Victoria, in team roping heeler standings but narrowed the margin with a win at his hometown rodeo.
Middleton and Moss will be two of the favourites in team roping at the October 24-27 Warwick Rodeo, the only four-day rodeo in the APRA other than the National Finals Rodeo.
Warwick and Mt Isa are the two richest rodeos in the APRA so a win at Warwick will go a long way towards securing a pro tour title for either rider for most money won during the pro tour.
Emerald brothers Shane and Kacey Kenny will both be strong chances at Warwick after winning in their hometown rodeo at Emerald.
Shane won the rope and tie to increase his lead in the APRA standings and Kacey recorded one of the fastest times of the season, 3.5 seconds, to win the steer wrestling to maintain his position in the top two.
Emerald has a reputation for fast times in roping, steer wrestling and the barrel race and 2013 was no exception.
In steer wrestling, the top four were under four seconds.
A rodeo at Cooloman in New South Wales on October 19 will be the final warm-up for riders heading to the October 24-27 Warwick Rodeo.
Emerald open winners: Bull ride Sonny Schafferius (Dysart) and Sean Lynch (Wagga Wagga)
Saddle bronc Peter Moffatt (Augathella)
Bareback bronc ride Clint Burton (Miles)
Steer wrestling Kacey Kenny (Emerald)
Rope and tie Shane Kenny (Emerald)
Team roping Clancy Middleton and Brody Moss (both Emerald)
Breakaway roping Jorja Watkins (Alton Downs)
Barrel racing Jill Lyons (Gracemere)
