QUEENSLAND riders Mark Collins and David Worsfold won two of the rough stock events at the 70th Tumbarumba Rodeo in southern New South Wales on New Year’s Day.
More than 200 riders from all Eastern States and South Australia headed to Tumbarumba for the anniversary rodeo but no one told the bulls, every rider was thrown off inside eight seconds so there was no bull ride winner.
Collins, of Warwick, won the saddle bronc with a score of 83 from John McNamee with a three-way tie for third between Samuel Osborne, Michael Maher and Jake Finlay. Maher is from Warwick and is the current standings leader in the saddle bronc after wins at Mt Isa and Warwick late last year.
Worsfold hails from Wandoan and scored 83 to win the bareback, one in front of Boggabri (NSW) star Cody Angland.
Hughenden rider Clancy Middleton made his trip south worthwhile with a second in the rope and tie at Tumbarumba behind Tasmanian cowboy Luke Hamilton.
Former Queensland and now Victorian cowboy Lee Kimber won the steer wrestling in 5.7 seconds.
Adele Edwards from Gundagai (NSW) was a clear winner in the barrel race while Leslie Moore from Willung, Victoria, won breakaway roping.
In team roping, Kimber and fellow Victorian Glen Perkins won with 5.35 seconds.
Queensland placegetters included Emerald rider Brody Moss who was third in combination with Heath Litchfield in team roping. Central Queensland rider Brenton Bell finished fourth in team roping with Charters Towers cowboy Mark Gibb.
Three of the final four rodeos in January are in Tasmania and the fourth at Wilmington in South Australia on Australia Day.
The majority of rodeos in the first three months of the year are in the southern states.
The first Queensland rodeo for the year will be the Millmerran Show Rodeo on February 28.
