The Comet Rodeo will be the first in Central Queensland this year in the APRA. It will be followed by a bull ride at Roma on Good Friday, an Easter Sunday Rodeo at Roma and an Easter Saturday rodeo at Emerald.
Most of the Queensland rodeos are in the first eight months of the season from May to December.
Lyons led the barrel racing standings into this year but with the Victorian season hotting up, she has been overtaken by Bunyip (Vic) rider Shianne O’Donoghue-Kent.
O’Donoghue-Kent has the chance to move further ahead in the standings when she heads to a rodeo at Clare in South Australia this weekend.
Lyons was third in the barrel race at Bundaberg in her most recent performance in Queensland behind fellow Queenslanders Jane Fay and Cheyenne Whitwell.
Fay hails from Warra and is the current leader in breakaway roping standings and odds on to go into the Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships on October 22-25 as the leader.
In a change to the format for determining title winners, the top-15 riders will all receive one point for each dollar of prize money won during the season as they go into round 1 of four championship rounds at Warwick.
The leaders will have the advantage in the championships but the scoring system has been designed to allow the 15th placed rider a chance to win the title with a top performance at Warwick.
Many of the best riders in the nation will be at the Comet Rodeo.
One quarter of the riders in the top three in the eight championship events are from Central Queensland.
After Comet, Central Queensland riders will have two weeks to prepare for the Emerald M Group Easter Sunflower Festival Rodeo at the Emerald Showgrounds on April 4 and a bull ride and rodeo on separate days at Roma on the Easter weekend.
