WARRA cowgirl Jane Fay will be favourite for the open breakaway roping at the Bundaberg Show Rodeo on Friday night. May 29
Fay is originally from the Northern Territory and headed the breakaway roping standings in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association season which ended on April 30.
She is a breakaway roping specialist but has also nominated for the barrel race and has the chance to secure a spot near the top of the APRA all around cowgirl standings with a strong performance on Friday night at Bundaberg.
The top 15 in each event to April 30 qualified for the Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships on October 22-25 and now competitors are chasing points in the new season standings so they can finish in the top-15 and qualify for next year’s Australian championships.
Fay won’t get it all her own way in Bundaberg as Victorian star Latteliah DeSpirt has nominated for the breakaway roping.
DeSpirt enjoyed outstanding success in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia during the Christmas Run of rodeos late in 2014 and early this year.
Leanne Kenny from Emerald and Ebenezer rider Tamara Knox are two who could challenge Fay and DeSpirt for top billing at Bundaberg.
All APRA events will be held at Bundaberg, including the saddle bronc, bareback bronc and bull rides.
Western Queensland pair Greg Hamilton and Jamahl Hamilton are two of the likely placegetters in the saddle bronc along with Millmerran star John McNamee.
In the junior steer ride and second-division bull ride, Bundaberg rider Liam Cann will be one to watch.
After this weekend, APRA competitors will head to Bowen River in North Queensland for one of the few two day rodeos on the circuit, a rodeo for championship points on June 6-7.
Bundaberg Rodeo will be held at the Bundaberg Show Precinct on Friday 29th May, commencing at 6pm.
