SIX riders from Central Queensland are in the running for the rope and tie title in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.
The title will be up for grabs in the four rounds of the Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships starting Thursday at the Warwick Showgrounds. (Oct 22-25)
For the first time in decades, the championship battles for APRA titles will be at the Warwick Rodeo and will be held in conjunction with second-division and junior competitions.
The six riders from Central Queensland in the rope and tie are Emerald trio Shane Kenny, Brody Moss and Grant Hanrahan, Shane Iker from Alton Downs, Clermont rider Brendan Kenny and Rockhampton young gun Cameron Milner.
As the standings leader in the APRA at the end of the 2015 season, Kenny is favourite to win his 13th rope and tie title.
But he won’t get it all his own way from the Central Queensland contingent or former Emerald rider Clancy Middleton who now calls Hughenden in North Queensland home.
Moss and Middleton finished the year on top of the team roping standings and will combine this week in Warwick.
There will be some strong competition from Victorian trio Terry Evison, Glen Perkins and Lee Kimber who are in the top-six in the standings in the rope and tie.
Ebenezer rider Mark Knox has won the rope and tie title in the APRA and is a strong chance going into the championship rounds in eighth place.
Eleven of the top-15 ropers in the nation are from Queensland.
Campbell Hodson (Townsville), Stuart McGuire-Spalding (Taroom) and Thomas Whitwell (Mt Tarampa) will all compete in the rope and tie along with Paul Emerson from Toolamba West in Victoria.
The four championship rounds start at 6pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday and then at 1.30pm Sunday.
