FOUR riders are in the running for the all around cowgirl title at this week’s Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships.
The top 15 riders in the 2015 season in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association have qualified for the championships at the Warwick Showgrounds.
The championships start on Thursday night and there will be rounds at 6pm Friday and Saturday and then the final of four rounds at 1.30pm Sunday.
There will be second-division and junior events at the rodeo on the weekend along with the championship rounds in eight events.
The favourite for the all around title is Moree rider Wendy Caban.
She has the most titles among the all around contenders and has form on the board at the Warwick Showgrounds.
The biggest threat to Caban will be Lavington (NSW) rider Stephanie Gard who won the breakaway roping title in the past two years and qualified second this year behind Queensland-based star Jane Willoughby. She is also in the barrel race.
The other two riders in both cowgirl events are Victorians Leslie Moore from Lockington and Leongatha star Elley Hulls.
Queensland riders with strong chances to win individual cowgirl titles are Willoughby, breakaway roper Cheyenne Whitwell from Mt Tarampa and Gracemere barrel racer Jill Lyons.
The cowboys all around title will also be up for grabs with Emerald rider Shane Kenny the favourite to add to his 31 APRA titles in four categories since the early 1990s.
