Holiday rodeos at Myrtleford, Yarrawonga and Beechworth (Vic), Tumbarumba and Finley (NSW), Carrieton (SA) and Carrick (Tas).

RODEO action will hot up in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania over the Christmas/New Year period.

The Christmas Run is one of three busy periods in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.

The first of seven Christmas Run rodeos is the Myrtleford Golden Spurs Rodeo on Boxing Day in Victoria.

It will be a battle between riders from four states for favouritism in the bull rides on the Christmas Run.

Former world rookie all around and bull riding champion Brad Pierce will travel from Tooma in New South Wales to compete after winning the APRA saddle bronc title two months ago in Warwick.

Pierce is one of a handful of APRA members equally adept at two rough stock events in the APRA.

Some of his toughest opposition will come from Wangaratta (Vic) bull rider Bryden Atkins who is currently 19th on APRA standings but almost certain to boost his position during the next fortnight.

Longreach cowboy Sally Malay will feel right at home on the Christmas Run as he was based at Yarrawonga before moving to Queensland. He won both the open and second-division bull rides at the Rosewood Rodeo this month in New South Wales so has form on the board.

Katherine (NT) rider Darcy McBean has nominated for the Christmas Run after winning the bull ride at Emerald early on this season’s Northern Run.

In timed events, two of the riders to watch are Victorians Terry Evison and Lee Kimber who both call Lockington home.

Evison learnt his rodeo skills at Nilma North in the Gippsland area and has now moved north towards the Murray River while Kimber is originally from Queensland and is now the APRA executive chairman.

In cowgirl events, three of the riders to watch on the Christmas Run are Leslie Moore, of Lockington, current all around champion Stephanie Gard from Table Top (NSW) and current breakaway roping champion Cherie O’Donoghue from Lockington.

All seven Christmas Run rodeos are for APRA championship points and a chance for riders to improve their chances of qualifying in the top-15 for next year’s Australian Championships.

STANDINGS LEADERS: All around cowboy - Shane Iker (Alton Downs, Qld); saddle bronc - Michael Maher (Warwick, Qld); bull ride -Mark Lamberth (Alice Springs, NT); bareback - Jack Kidd (Croydon Qld); rope and tie Shane Kenny (Emerald, Qld); steer wrestling - Errol Frain (Yeppoon, Qld), team roping header - Clancy Middleton (Hughenden, Qld), team roping heeler Chris Cameron (Kirwan Qld), all around cowgirl Wendy Caban (Moree, NSW), barrel race Jo Caldwell ( Murrurundi NSW), breakaway roping Kelly Westlake (Scone NSW)

PROGRAM: December 26 – Myrtleford Golden Spurs Rodeo (Vic); December 27 – Carrieton (SA); December 31-January 1 – Alton Downs Double Dip (Qld); January 1 – Tumbarumba 71st Rodeo (NSW); January 2 – Yarrawonga (Vic); January 8 – Finley (NSW); January 9 – Beechworth (Vic) and Carrick Bull Ride and Rodeo Spectacular (Tas).
