MITCHELL cowboy Greg Hamilton is one of the riders in form in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association entering the final three weeks of the season.
The top 15 in the eight APRA championship events to April 30 will qualify for The Warwick Rodeo National Finals on October 27-30 at the Warwick Showgrounds.
Hamilton won two of the three saddle bronc rides on the Victorian long weekend in March but showed with scores of 88 at Chiltern and 84 at Kyabram he is at the top of his form.
The 88 at Chiltern is one of the highest scores in any rough stock event in the current APRA season.
He is in second place on APRA standings behind leader John McNamee from Millmerran.
Warwick pair Michael Maher and Mark Collins are placed third and fourth.
The remaining season rodeos in April are the final chance for riders to press for a spot in the top-15 and take the most possible carryover points into the finals.
The finals in Warwick will be held over four rounds but competitors will receive carryover points for the prize money won on the pro tour to April 30.
Last year, the riders who won at the finals in Warwick also won the titles.
While the system is designed so every rider at the finals has the chance to win the title, the reality is riders in the top five have the inside running due to carryover points. Those at the bottom of the top 15 can’t afford to miss a place in a round at the finals if they want to win the title buckle.
Standings leaders: All around Terry Evison (Lockington, Vic); saddle bronc John McNamee (Millmerran, Qld); bull ride Rod Thorp (Young, NSW); bareback Ben Hall (Tumbarumba, NSW); rope and tie Lee Kimber (Lockington, Vic); steer wrestling Errol Frain (Yeppoon, Qld); team roping header Terry Evison (Lockington, Vic), team roping header Aaron Bookluck (Nilma North, Vic), all around cowgirl Stephanie Gard (Lavington, NSW); barrel race Shianne O’Donoghue-Kent (Bunyip, Vic); breakaway roping Elley Hulls (Leongatha, Vic).
