JOHN McNamee and Cheyenne Whitwell are the rookie standings leaders with only this weekend remaining in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association season.
The pair have secured the rookie pro tour titles in all around categories.
Saddle Bronc riders Luke Chaplain (Broadford VIC) and Greg Hamilton (Mitchell QLD) will be two of the riders to watch at the Narrabri Showgrounds where rodeo action starts at 5:30pm at the Narrabri Showgrounds.
The top-15 in open standings in each APRA event after this weekend will qualify for The Warwick Rodeo National Finals in late October.
Any prizemoney secured this weekend will help boost a competitors chance at the finals as each competitor will take carryover points into Warwick for each dollar won on the pro tour to April 30.
McNamee has taken the lead in open saddle bronc standings in the second half of the season and is a clear leader in rookie saddle bronc standings.
He is originally from Millmerran in Queensland but is now based in Victoria.
Whitwell hails from Mt Tarampa in the Lockyer Valley in Queensland and leads rookie all around cowgirl, rookie barrel racing and rookie breakaway roping standings.
She is 7th in open barrel racing standings and 11th in breakaway roping so is assured of qualification for the finals.
Moree rider Wendy Caban has secured her spot for The Warwick Rodeo National Finals in breakaway roping.
One of the star northern New South Wales rough riders is Troy Wilkinson, of Upper Horton, who is currently eighth in APRA bull ride standings behind leader Jason O’Hearn who hails from Rothbury (NSW).
After this weekend in Narrabri, APRA action in the new season starts with a rodeo at St George on May 1 and then the Nebo Rodeo on May 7.
ROOKIE STANDINGS LEADERS: All around cowboy and saddle bronc - John McNamee (Vic); bull ride - Mitchell Paton (Qld); rope and tie and team roping header - Heath Nichols (NSW); steer wrestling - George Wheeler (Qld); team roping heeler - Nicholas Newman (Tas); all around cowgirl, barrel racing and breakaway roping - Cheyenne Whitwell (Qld).
