PROSERPINE bull rider Roy Dunn will be one of the favourites for the two bull rides at the Bowen River Rodeo this weekend, June 11-12.
With 300 nominations for each of the two rodeos, the number of riders competing is one of the highest this year in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association. Dunn has drawn the Gill Brothers bull Electric Boggalu and proved with a win at the Mt Isa Rodeo in 2014 he can more than mix it with the best in the business. He has often been at the top of APRA standings and can secure a spot in the top-five this season with success at Bowen River.
Former Beaudesert and now Central Queensland rider Jared Borghero will aim to ride for eight seconds on Gold in the Saturday bull ride. Borghero also works as a bull fighter in the sport.
Central Queensland star Sonny Schafferius will be aiming to go time on the back of the bull Reservoir Dog and could be the greatest threat to Dunn for the winners’ cheque.
As well as strong nominations in open, second division and junior rough stock events, there will be plenty of cowgirls in Bowen River with 22 nominations on Saturday for the barrel race and 25 for breakaway roping.
The tightest battles of the weekend could be in steer wrestling with three past champions Shane Iker, Shane Kenny and Cameron Bell, all from Central Queensland, strong chances.
Nominations are similar for the separate rodeos on the Saturday and Sunday at Bowen River.
The rodeos at Bowen River will be the last in the APRA before the start of the Northern Run on July 8 at Emerald with the junior national finals. There will be an open rodeo at Emerald on July 9 along with the second day of the junior finals
Bowen River Rodeo for both Saturday and Sunday will commence at 9am at the Bowen River Rodeo Grounds.
Rodeo program: June 11-12 Bowen River Rodeo; July 8-9 APRA Junior Nationals Finals Emerald; July 9 Emerald Ag Grow Rodeo; July 30 Taroom Rodeo.
