TOWNSVILLE rider Suzie Fearon is the highest-placed Queensland barrel racer going into The Carlton Dry Warwick Rodeo National Finals on October 27-30 at the Warwick Showgrounds.
Fearon was fifth in Australian Professional Rodeo Association standings at the end of the 2015-2016 season so will be one of the favourites for the National Finals.
Each of the top 15 will take carryover points from their season into the final which gives the top five the advantage even if the 15th placed rider can still win the title with placings in each round of the finals.
Fearon will face tough opposition in the National Finals, especially from New South Wales rider Teneille Little who won the title in 2005, 2009 and 2010.
Moree cowgirl Wendy Caban won the Barrel Rracing in 2008 and 2013 while Leslie Moore from New South Wales is the defending champion.
The top two on the standings, Bunyip (Vic) rider Shianne O’Donoghue-Kent and Stephanie Gard (Table Top, NSW) will take some beating after being the best performers in the Barrel Race on the Pro Tour.
Stephanie, 21, was last year’s APRA All Around Cowgirl winner and is in the final along with her sister Ellie, 13, who goes into the final fourth in the standings.
The Barrel Race will be one of the most open events at the finals with plenty of highly credentialed finalists.
Jo Caldwell from Murrurundi (NSW) is a strong chance after a second in the aggregate in the Barrel Race at this year’s Mt Isa Rodeo. She backed up with third in round 1 of Breakaway Roping at Mt Isa to win the All Around Cowgirl buckle.
Victorian star Cherie O’Donoghue from Lockington goes in the Barrel Racing National Finals in sixth place and would love nothing better than to win her first Barrel Racing title to add to her three Breakaway Roping and six All Around Cowgirl titles.
The National Finals rounds in Warwick will be under lights on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and on the Sunday afternoon at the Warwick Showgrounds. Second-division and junior events will also be held at the Warwick Rodeo.
