THE fastest Breakaway Roper in Australian Professional Rodeo Association history will be one of the riders to watch at the Carrieton Rodeo in South Australia on December 30.
Carrieton is one of six rodeos in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales as part of the Christmas Run in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.
Candy Michaelis from Lewiston in South Australia set a new Breakaway Roping Record last year when she stopped the clock at 1.75 seconds at Kapunda.
She will contest the Barrel Race and Breakaway Roping at Carrieton on December 30.
Her toughest opponent in Breakaway Roping will be Renee Pearson from Eudunda (SA) who won the event last month at Kapunda with a time of 2.35 seconds.
In Saddle Bronc, one of the riders to watch will be Goolwa cowboy David Stacey who has been a placegetter at many rodeos in South Australia in the past decade.
Some of Stacey’s toughest opposition will come from Warwick (Qld) rider Lane Grayson who was a National Finalist this year in Saddle Bronc.
Last year at Carrieton, Grayson scored 74 to win by one point from Stacey and NSW rider Tim Hammond.
Alice Springs cowboy Tom Willoughby will compete in the Bull Ride, Bareback Bronc Ride and Steer Wrestling after winning the Bareback last year with a score of 87.
Willoughby was third last month in Bareback at the Kapunda Rodeo so has form on the board.
In the Bull Ride, three of the riders to watch will be Sally Malay from Longreach in Queensland, Albury (NSW) rider Benjamin Gard and Willoughby.
Gard placed second last year in the Bull Ride at Carrieton with 86 points and Malay competed in this year’s Bull Ride National Finals.
The Carrieton Rodeo on December 30 is for APRA Championship Points and there will be action in eight open events as well as junior and second-division events.
Carrieton Rodeo starts at 7pm on December 30 and is at the Carrieton Recreation Grounds
