WANDOAN cowboy Dave Worsfold will be one of the shortest-priced favourites on record when he heads to Comet for an Australian Professional Rodeo Association rodeo on Saturday. (May 27).
Worsfold won the Bareback Bronc Ride last weekend at Nebo with 91 on the Gill Brothers horse Little Egypt to set a new APRA record.
He broke the record set by Tamworth rider Darren Clarke at 90 on John Gill’s horse Puberty Blues at Cessnock in 1997.
The record was equalled by Wade Clifford on John Gill’s Ramblin Angel in Melbourne in 2010.
Worsfold spent eight years competing on the North American circuit and now works on the family cattle properties and lives at Wandoan.
He has won the past two Australian titles at The Warwick Rodeo National Finals and going on form is odds on to win another.
Worsfold is one of more than 220 nominations for the Comet Benefit Rodeo on Saturday.
The rodeo is at the Comet Rodeo Grounds with timed events starting at 11am and rough stock events at 6pm.
Springsure rider Allan Powell will be favourite for Saddle Bronc after winning two rounds and the average at the National Finals last year in Warwick. He had the best score of last year’s Finals with 81 on Cheyene Top Girl.
Powell will face tough opposition from Wandoan rider Cameron Webster and Warwick pair Lane Grayson and Lucas Wilson.
There are strong nominations in all of the five open timed events at Comet.
Reigning APRA All Around Champion Shane Iker has nominated for the Rope and Tie, Steer Wrestling and Team Roping and will face some of his toughest opposition from Townsville star Campbell Hodson and Hughenden rider Clancy Middleton.
In the cowgirl events, Emerald rider Leanne Caban will be one of the riders to beat, especially in Breakaway Roping where she leads the APRA standings.
In the Barrel Race, she comes up against past Champion Teneille Little.
The best juniors in the nation will be back in Central Queensland for the Junior National Finals Rodeo at Emerald on July 7-8. The open rodeo at Emerald is on July 8 at the start of the APRA Northern Run.
