THE Caban siblings from Emerald will be two of the riders to watch at the Junior National Finals Rodeo at Emerald on Friday and Saturday. June 29/30
Clay Caban will go into the junior breakaway roping ranked No.1 in a field of 10.
He is also at the top of the list in the junior rope and tie and ranked third in junior team roping.
His toughest opposition will come from New South Wales rider Toby Hale and Kobe Miller, of Warwick in Queensland.
Miller competed in the Warwick Rodeo APRA National Finals last year for open riders so is a strong chance to win more buckles at junior level.
In the barrel race, Clay’s sister Maddison is ranked in the top two in juniors in the run-up to the Junior National Finals.
There will be three rounds of the Junior National Finals, one of the Friday night and two on the Saturday.
The sibling’s parents, Dale and Leanne Caban, will compete along with Clay and Maddison in the Emerald Rodeo on Saturday. June 30.
Dale will compete in team roping and the rope and tie while Leanne has nominated in breakaway roping and the barrel race.
Clay will compete in open team roping and three junior events on the Saturday at Emerald. Maddison is also in three junior events.
Most of the 10 finalists in each APRA junior event will also compete in junior events at the Emerald CQ Bodywork Rodeo on Saturday taking the fields in some events to more than 20.
Wandoan riders Cameron Webster and David Worsfold are two of the favourites in rough stock events at Emerald on Saturday. Webster leads the saddle bronc standings and Worsfold is seventh in the bareback and a past title winner.
There are two riders in the top-six in bull ride standings competing at Emerald, Biloela rider Troy Berry and Jack Whalan from Giru in North Queensland.
This Saturday’s rodeo at Emerald will be the first on the Northern Run. The next events will be the Golden Run Rural Richmond Rodeo and the Taroom Rodeo on July 28 as a forerunner to rodeo action at Hughenden, Cloncurry and Mt Isa.
