AFTER splitting first at the Warwick Rodeo, bareback bronc riders Clint Burton and Gerard Oversby have the chance to move up the Australian Professional Rodeo Association standings in eight rodeos in the southern states during the Christmas Run.
Burton from Miles has went within one point of winning a national title and made it two firsts in two years at the Warwick Rodeo when he split first with Oversby when both scored 158 over two head late last month.
Last year, Burton split first with Boggabri rider Cody Angland in the Alex Turner Memorial Bareback Bronc Ride.
Oversby hails from Western Australia and is now based at Walcha in New South Wales.
He has also enjoyed success in North America.
Neither Burton or Oversby was in the top-15 going into the Warwick Rodeo and both are now strong chances to make next year’s National Finals Rodeo after their success in one of the big two rodeos in the APRA.
Roma rider Jamie Howlett was the leader going into Warwick.
Performances on the Christmas Run will be even more important this year as riders will carry points from pro tour (season) placings into the battle for titles at the National Finals Rodeo.
There will also be a pro tour bareback bronc riding buckle to win for the most money won in the season.
While most of the bareback riders are specialists, Oversby also competes in bull riding and was fourth in last year’s pro tour.
Cody Angland is another rough stock rider who has two events, the bareback bronc and saddle bronc rides. He was fourth in the standings going into Warwick.
One rider to watch in bareback this year will be Monto builder Stuart Frame who has retired from bull riding with one national title to his credit and is now concentrating on bareback.
The Christmas Run of rodeos starts with the Myrtleford Golden Spurs on December 26 and ends with Beechworth & Deniliquin Under the Stars Rodeos on January 3.
APRA Program: November 15 Kapunda (SA); November 28 Bundaberg (Qld); December 6 Rosewood (NSW); December 20 Grong Grong (NSW); December 26 Myrtleford (Vic); December 27 Carrieton (SA); December 30 Yarrawonga (Vic); January 1 Wangaratta (Vic) and Tumbarumba (NSW), January 2 Finley (NSW); January 3 Beechworth (Vic) and Deniliquin (NSW).
