EMERALD miner Shane Kenny will be hoping to add to his 31 title wins in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association when he heads to the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) at the Queensland State Equestrian Centre at Caboolture on May 1-4.
Kenny won his first title at age 17 in 1992 and a year later won his first all around title for most prize money won in all events at the finals.
Last year, he took his title tally to 31 with all around and rope and tie victories at the NFR at the Gold Coast.
He has 14 all around title wins, the most by any rider in any APRA category, 12 in the rope and tie, three in steer wrestling and two in team roping.
This year, the NFR has been moved north to Caboolture and will coincide with the Urban Country Music Festival.
The APRA season finished with seven rodeos at Easter and Kenny showed he will go into the finals in form.
He was equal second in steer wrestling and the rope and tie at Roma and won the team roping in combination with Peter Young at the Emerald Rodeo. Kenny capped a successful weekend with fifth in the rope and tie at Emerald.
Kenny’s toughest opposition at the finals will come from past all around winner, Alton Downs (Qld) rider Shane Iker, and Victorian star Terry Evison who was placed in seven events in the four Easter Rodeos in Victoria.
The top 15 in each APRA event have qualified for the National Finals Rodeo on May 1-4 which will be held for the first time at the purpose-built Queensland State Equestrian Centre at Caboolture.
There will be four rounds at the finals with points for placings in each round determining the 11 title winners.
Events at the finals are saddle bronc ride, bull ride, bareback bronc ride, rope and tie, steer wrestling, team roping, ladies barrel race and ladies breakaway roping. Competitors in two or more events will also be eligible to vie for the all around title buckles for cowboys and cowgirls.
