Webster challenges for pro tour title

WANDOAN cowboy Cameron Webster has the chance to move closer to the lead in saddle bronc standings when he lines up at the Comet Benefit Rodeo on Saturday. (March 23)

Webster won two saddle bronc rides on the Victorian long weekend in early March to move closer to standings leader Brad Pierce, of Tooma. Webster scored a rare 90 to win at Chiltern and 84 in victory at Merrijig.

It was a clean sweep for Queensland saddle bronc riders on the long weekend as Mitchell rider Greg Hamilton won at the Kyabram Rodeo with 79.

Pierce has not nominated for Comet which gives Webster a chance to close the lead further.

Webster has drawn the horse Have A Look at Comet. Hamilton is on Curry Powder.

There are 17 in the bull ride at Comet, including Gracemere cowboy Stuart Frame who has drawn Gun Torque.

Frame is fourth in bull ride standings in the APRA and 13th in the bareback, an event he will also contest at Comet.

The top-15 in each event will qualify for the National Finals Rodeo at the Gold Coast Convention Centre on June 13-16.

There are only seven championship points rodeos remaining in the 2012-2013 season which ends on April 30. The leaders in each event at the end of the season will be presented with buckles for winning the pro tour.

Four of the crucial rodeos for 2012-2013 points are in Queensland, Comet on Saturday, a Roma bull ride on Good Friday, Emerald Sunflower Festival Rodeo on Easter Saturday and Roma Rodeo with all eight championship events on Easter Sunday.

The Comet Rodeo at the Comet Showgrounds starts at noon Saturday for timed events and at 6pm for the three rough stock events.
