At last year’s Annual General Meeting an agenda item was tabled from Brad Cavanagh regarding the criteria to determine the Australian Champions.
In summary he suggested that money won through the Pro Tour season be carried into the NFR.
ie: if the Pro Tour Champion won $13,000 for the year then he starts the Finals with 13,000 points. (Approximately $13,000 is the average earnings for Pro Tour Champions over the past 4 years.)
Brad proposed that each round of the NFR would carry 5,000 for a first place 3750, for 2nd 2500 for 3rd 1,250 for 4th. The aggregate would be double. In effect this gives those members who travel and/or win more money throughout the year a slight but deserving advantage over those lower in the standings. At the same time the person in 15th position in the standings still has a realistic chance to win the Australian Title.
This proposal was discussed at the AGM with the large majority of those present in support of the concept. It was resolved that the Board discuss it further in terms of the points allocation and include it in the Rodeo News Magazine. The matter was discussed at a further two Directors meetings and then adopted at a recent meeting in April. The details of the new rules was to be printed in this magazine however following a number of negative views and particularly in relation to how the change was initiated the Board has decided to put it out to the members for further feedback.
The proposed points criteria is as follows.
Option 1:
Rounds to pay:
1st 4000
2nd 3000
3rd 2000
4th 1000
Aggregate Payout
1st 5000
2nd 3750
3rd 2500
4th 1275
Option 2:
Rounds to pay:
1st 5000
2nd 3750
3rd 2500
4th 1250
Aggregate Payout
1st 6000
2nd 4500
3rd 3000
4th 1500
When the Sudden Death criteria was first introduced around 20 years ago it was done so with the view to revert back to the original system if the prize money at the NFR increased to a degree where the person in 15th position could win enough to win an Australian Title similar to that of the PRCA and CPRA now.
Unfortunately this has not eventuated however in a bid to improve entry numbers at rodeos which aids committees, increases prize money and rewards the most consistent winners over a 12 month period this new criteria has been proposed.
The Board remains committed to introducing this criteria for the 2014 NFR but invites input from all members either for or against the change before they make their finals decision.
For all those attending this year’s NFR you can show your support either for or against the proposal at our Competitor Briefing at 9:30am Thursday 16th June on the Gold Coast or by emailing our office prior to 5th June.
We have identified some of the positives for this proposal and they are all to the benefit the Association, the sport and the members that most support the APRA and our affiliates. For those that are against this proposal please state your reason and why you think the current situation in better for the sport now and in the future. A simple ‘Yes, I am for the new proposed change,” will be ample for those in favour as the Board agrees with you and the benefits are obvious.
This is your chance to have your say. If you require any further information please contact your Director or Rodeo Administrator.
