AFTER winning the open bull ride at the Mt Isa Rodeo, Alton Downs cowboy Jared Borghero will start favourite for the bull ride at the St Brendan’s Rodeo at Yeppoon on Saturday. (Sept 3)
St Brendan’s College Rodeo will commence at 5:45pm Saturday night at St Brendan’s College.
Borghero’s win in August was in the richest rodeo in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.
Originally from Beaudesert in the south-east of Queensland, Borghero has done a lot of bull fighting down the years but is now at the height of his powers on the back of a bucking bull.
The bulls proved too good for most of the riders in the final at Mt Isa with only Borghero riding time.
He scored 81 for equal second in round 1 and 86 in the final for a runaway win in the aggregate. Round 1 winner Roy Dunn, of Proserpine, was second overall at Mt Isa and will provide the toughest opposition for Borghero at the rodeo at St Brendan’s.
In the bareback at St Brendan’s, Wandoan cowboy David Worsfold will start favourite after being joint winner at Mt Isa this year.
Fellow Wandoan rider Cameron Webster and Mitchell rider Greg Hamilton will be two to watch in saddle bronc.
The rodeo on Saturday has attracted 216 nominations, including 31 in team roping and 23 in the ladies barrel race. There are four junior events, including the junior steer ride which has attracted 30 riders, including some students from St Brendan’s.
The rodeo is for championship points in the APRA and is one of the last chances for competitors to fine tune their form before the four rounds of The Warwick Rodeo National Finals on October 27-30.
The top 15 in each event to April 30 have already qualified for this year’s finals and riders are already chasing prize money and a position in the top 15 to qualify for next year’s national finals in Warwick.
