EMERALD cowgirl Leanne Caban is the early favourite for the 2017 pro tour title in breakaway roping after winning the event at the St Brendan’s College Rodeo at Yeppoon.
Some of the best nominations in the new Australian Professional Rodeo Association season were received for the St Brendan’s Rodeo, the last in the APRA in Queensland before The Carlton Dry Warwick Rodeo National Finals on October 27-30 at the Warwick Showgrounds.
The top-15 as at April 30 will compete in this year’s national finals in Warwick and new season standings started on May 1.
Caban has won the second most prize money in any of the eight championship events so far in the new season.
Her wins include victory at the Mt Isa Rodeo in round 1 and overall and a second in round 2.
The major winner at St Brendan’s was Campbell Hodson from Townsville who won the rope and tie and joined with Liam Davison from Charters Towers to win the team roping.
Mitchell rider Greg Hamilton showed he is in form for the national finals in saddle bronc with a win at St Brendan’s.
None of the bull riders made time at St Brendan’s which is not unusual in the modern era where bulls are being bred to buck.
Some Queensland riders are expected to compete at the Marrabel Rodeo in South Australia on October 2 to fine tune their form for the national finals.
