JORDAN O’Neill and Lane Grayson will be two of the Queensland riders heading south for Australian Professional Rodeo Association action this weekend.
O’Neill, of Caboolture, recorded two thirds and a fourth in Steer Wrestling at the Warwick Rodeo National Finals in October and needs some placings to move into the top-15 in the current season.
He won’t get it all his own way at Trafalgar (Victoria) on Saturday (December 17)
The top-15 in each APRA event at the end of September (2017) will qualify for next year’s National Finals and O’Neill will come up against two of the best in the business from Victoria, Terry Evison and Lee Kimber at Trafalgar.
Evison will have a busy Saturday at Trafalgar as he is the stock contractor for the rodeo.
O’Neill is currently 18th in the standings. His brother Lachlan, who isn’t making the trip south this weekend, currently leads the Steer Wrestling.
Grayson hails from Swanfels near Warwick and competed in his first APRA Finals on the last weekend in October at the Warwick Rodeo.
He spent the Australian winter in North America where he recorded some placings and will be one of the strongest chances in the Saddle Bronc at Rosewood (NSW) on Saturday. (Dec 17).
Grayson’s toughest opposition at Rosewood will be Tooma (NSW) rider Brad Pierce now he has decided to concentrate on Saddle Bronc and retire from the Bull Ride.
The rodeos in New South Wales and Victoria this weekend will enable competitors to fine tune their form for the start of the Christmas Run of rodeos in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia starting December 26 with the Myrtleford Golden Spurs Rodeo.
While a large crowd is expected at the Rosewood Rodeo on Saturday at the Rosewood Golf Club from 5.30pm, Trafalgar is a competitor-only rodeo.
Christmas Run Rodeos:
December 26 – Myrtleford Golden Spurs Rodeo (Vic)
December 30 – Carrieton (SA), Yarrawonga (Vic)
December 31 – Mt Isa New Year’s Eve Rodeo (Qld)
January 1 – Tumbarumba (NSW)
January 6 – Finley (NSW)
January 7 – Beechworth (Vic).
