CENTRAL Queensland team ropers Shane Iker and Brenton Bell will be two of the riders to watch in timed events at the St Brendan’s College rodeo at Yeppoon on September 2.
Iker, of Alton Downs, and Gracemere rider Bell were round winners at the Mt Isa Rotary Rodeo this month.
Going into Mt Isa, Iker was fourth in team roping header standings and Bell 15th in heeler standings.
The St Brendan’s Rodeo will be the second last championship points rodeo in the current Australian Professional Rodeo Association season as open riders aim to be in the top 15 to qualify for The Warwick Rodeo National Finals on October 26-29.
Iker is also ninth in the rope and tie and 12th in steer wrestling so has a strong chance of qualifying in all three events for Warwick.
Stock for the St Brendan’s Rodeo are being provided by Destiny Cattle Company, Trevor and Tony Dunne and Ross Ford.
A Trans Tasman Challenge will be held as part of the rodeo at Yeppoon.
Two of the Central Queensland riders set to star at Yeppoon are Emerald barrel racers Jaimi Downing and Ellysa Kenny.
Downing is third in APRA standings and Kenny seventh, the top two Queenslanders in a field led by New South Wales rider Jo Caldwell who won this month at Mt Isa.
Emerald rider Leanne Caban is 16th in barrel racing standings so will be hoping to place at Yeppoon as she aims for a top-15 finish and the chance to go for the all around cowgirl title in Warwick in October.
Caban has lead the breakaway roping standings most of the season and won both the barrel race and breakaway roping at Emerald in July so is in top form.
After the St Brendan’s Rodeo at Yeppoon on September 2, the only remaining APRA rodeos before the finals will be the Warwick Junior Rodeo on September 9 and rodeos on September 23 at Bundaberg (Qld) and Mt Hunter (NSW).
Program: September 2 – St Brendan’s Rodeo, Yeppoon, Qld
September 9 – Warwick Junior Rodeo, Qld
September 23 – Amber Ranch Bundaberg Rodeo, Qld
September 23 – K Ranch Timed Events Rodeo, Mt Hunter, NSW
